Knossos Beach Flashback

Thanks to Dr. Sophokles Emmanuel Logiadis, an excellent connoisseur of Crete and a fervent lover of nature, Knossos Beach Hotel was a landmark in the hotel business of Crete as it was the third hotel in a row to be built in 1971.

Dr. Logiadis chose one of the best locations as the hotel is built in a natural bay well protected from the wind with shallow crystal clear waters and a small island across the hotel. On the west side of the bay under water and in depths between 1 and 5 meters there are still the remains of a few ancient Minoan shipyards.

Dr. Sofokles Emmanuel Logiadis was born in 1923 in Crete, studied Civil Engineering in Athens and graduated with his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering in 1957 in Wien, Austria.

He married the American born Maria Kouklaki from Santa Cruz, California in 1955 and had two sons. She stood by him through his bold ventures, very progressive for those years, at the beginning of the first timid steps in the tourist industry.

He knew Crete inside out and loved it and its people very dearly. He contributed actively to the Cretan society with his pioneering ideas and plans as well as with his humanitarian deeds, with which he will always be remembered. His death in 1998 was a great loss both to his family and the community. Nowadays, his sons are continuing his vision of a village style resort following the Aegean architecture and giving emphasis on the initial concept of family atmosphere.
