Knossos Beach invites you to visit Crete during Easter and celebrate spring!
We have prepared an Easter program including all traditional ceremonies and rituals in order for you to experience the Greek Orthodox Easter and become part of the Greek way of life. Chef Lefteris Lazarou is preparing delicious tastes at Swell Restaurant.
Holy Thursday is the day for dyeing eggs red. The egg, is a symbol of life, while red is the color of life.
In the evening, after the reading of the 12 Gospel, the girls undertake the decoration of the Bier of Christ (epitaphios) with garlands of flowers, so that in the morning of Good Friday it is ready to receive the image of the body of Christ when He is taken down from the Cross.
On Holy Friday night the Epitaph procession service is held in every village or town. Four men carry a flower-decorated dome. Inside the dome is a cloth stitched in gold symbolising the body of Jesus Christ.
19:00 Dinner buffet with special fasting dishes
22:00 Lets walk all together to the village chapel to attend the ceremony and get blessed.
The festivities start early with baskets of sweet bread and red eggs delivered to all rooms.
On Saturday night the service begins at 22:00 hours. Exactly at midnight the priest performing the ceremony dressed in white garments stitched with gold and holding three white candles sings “CHRISTOS ANESTI” (Christ has risen) while bells ring joyfully and fireworks explode in the sky.
22:00 Join us to celebrate the Resurrection of the Christ at the village chapel.
24:00 Those who will manage to stay late will enjoy the traditional Greek “Magiritsa” egg-lemon soup.
On Easter Sunday Greeks celebrate the end of fasting and the resurrection of Jesus Christ by roasting lambs, crushing red eggs wishing each other the best, eating Tsoureki (Sweet Easter bread) and drinking local wine.
Children will get grouped together to play the hunt the “Treasure of the Red Egg”. Traditional music and dances will accompany the cooking of the lambs at the hotel’s gardens.
The hotel will be “dressed up” for the festivities, people will go around wishing “Christos Anesti” (Christ has risen) with the rejoinder “Alithos AnestiI” (Truly he has risen) to each other.
