PRESS RELEASE
INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF FIGURATIVE ARTS
28 June – 4 July 2010

Knossos Beach Bungalows & Suites will be hosting the International Symposium of Figurative Arts, “In the Light of Crete” from June 28th to July 4th, 2010 in honor of the memory of the hotel’s founder Dr. Sophokles-Emmanu el Logiadis. This unique symposium will celebrate the compound of two very powerful meanings, that of “Light”, which in Greek language is figuratively used to embody a source of life, culture, and creativity, and that of “Crete”, an island that draws interest not only for its rich history and mythology but also for its contribution to civilization.

Given the theme “In the Light of Crete”, the participating artists will create paintings and sculptures in their own personal style and engage in cultural dialogues and future quests. Entrance will be free to the public so visitors and hotel guests will have the unique opportunity to speak with the participating artists who have chosen the hospitality of Knossos Beach Bungalows & Suites as their environment to express their artistic inspirations and creations away from their familiar studios.

International Symposium of Figurative Arts
Knossos Beach Bungalows & Suites
4 July 2010

This week Knossos Beach Bungalows & Suites at Kokkini Hani was hosting the first edition of the International Symposium of Figurative Arts in memory of the hotel's founder, Dr Sophokles- Emmanuel Logiadis.

The theme of the inaugural edition, "In the Light of Crete", celebrates the union of "Light", figuratively used in Greek to mean the source of life, culture, and creativity and that of "Crete", an island that draws interest not only for its rich history and mythology but also for its contribution to European civilization.

For one week the participating artists, away from their familiar studios, have thus been able to create and live among the hotel's guests.

Participating Artists

Stella Bolonaki, Greece

"La Luna"
No. 1 Oils on canvas 120x100 cm
No. 2 Oils on canvas 80x80 cm
No. 3 Mixed media on canvas 80x80 cm

Stella's images are inspired from the film by the Taviani Brothers "Kaos» that evokes the mystery, drama, and beauty of moonlight. Using the primary form of the circle she has tried to transfer her perception of Cretan light that is connected with the mystery of moonlight.

Canuto Kalian, Denmark

Rhapsody I, 100xl2Qcm, mixed media on canvas RhapsodyII, 8Qx90cm, mixed media on canvas-Rhapsody II 80x90cm, mixed media on cardboard

Canute's paintings seen together can be regarded as a diary of the Symposium "In the Light of Crete": three different paintings, three different stories, told in three different languages. Canute's art expresses nostalgia for the return to the primal instincts, the liberation from the constraints of reason and the importance of the very act of painting.

Marianne Catzaras, Tunisia

La Grotte, photography, 60x80cm
Cite a la dérive, photography, 60x80cm
Les pleurs d'Ariam, photography, 60x80cm
La statue, photography, 60x80cm

By her photographic genius Marianne attracts interest by inviting us to question the world through her imaginary sensitiveness, challenging silence in an oscillation between dream and reality.

Manolis Charkoutsis, Greece

Photo-graphia, porolith, 140x130x35cm

The important aspect of this work is the movement and the interaction between the open window (the larger piece) and the removed piece (the smaller piece). For Manolis, Crete has been an open window to light from the time when the world began until now; the idea of this sculpture is that we are a whole but we break up continually and come together again, just like night and day.

Raquel Monje, Spain

Imperfect remembrance, 105x48x45cm

Raquel's work is based on remembrance. She reinterprets the Greek mosaic technique. She is interested in the idea that, however distorted, memories are a fragmented map of emotions. Reinterpreting them means relieving them of their imperfection while retaining their essence and giving them new meaning. Raquel used Cretan objects and wrapped them with small pieces of mirror, thus trapping the light and projecting it at the same time.

Life is a polyhedron full of faces. The more faces the better chance to enrich ourselves.
(Santiago Segovia)

Geeta Roopnarine, Trinidad and Tobago

Omphalos, 55x55x20 cm, marble from Thasos

Influenced by her interest in the Labyrinth of Minoa and Greek mythology, Geeta has worked for some time on "light" as a source, a centre in the dark and the idea of vortex, of energy spinning; hence the image of Omphalos (navel) that incorporates the idea of energy spinning from an unknown space that appears empty at first but is where things are brought to light. Geeta thought the brilliance of Cretan light would be best represented in white crystalline marble.

George Roussis, Greece

Knossos Harp, 60x70x20, grey marble
Pithari, 110x100
Ray of Light, 50x30X5

George's work used Cretan symbols and rearranged them in new compositions to express the sounds, light and strength of Crete, and especially Knossos's bull's horn that is also the symbol of Knossos Beach Bungalows and Suites.

Michael Ward, United Kingdom

Meander, 120x240 cm, acrylic, wood and plexiglass

The piece can be viewed as biological, geographic or archaeological. Are we viewing an object through a microscope or a part of the world from space? One piece of wood was used for all the parts of the work. Strata below the surface of the wood are revealed by routing.

" The ancient olive grove of Crete, in the depth of time... "

The visual arts exhibition entitled “The ancient olive grove of Crete in the depth of time” constitutes an important turning point in the efforts of the Network of Cultural Associations of Crete and the Technological Educational Institute Crete, for the salvation and distinction of ancient olive trees on the island. This is the contribution of artists from Greece and other countries in this great initiative.

Our aim is for future generations to inherit these trees which have been living on Cretan land for hundreds of years, some even from the Minoan period. They are a ncient yet alive monuments above ground, giving their fruit "with reverence" to people for centuries, and even millenniums. It is a great responsibility for all Cretans, to protect the ancient olive trees from public or private construction works.

In this promising effort, people from all over Crete participate, each with their own resources and means. The effort is promising because today, during the crisis in values and the economy, its shows us that there are so many people who believe in collective teamwork (as opposed to individualism), and in the conservation and enhancement of our environmental and cultural heritage. They also strongly believe however in the creativity of modern art! Yes, Crete and Greece as a whole, can protect and enhance its environment, it can walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, creating a civilization. Its people, as long as they believe in one another, can prove it!
