What is the "secret" of the Cretan diet?
The “secret” is that the Cretans are raised with the products of the earth. They eat abundant fresh greens that are matured on the trees and vines and vegetables & fruits that are served within hours of being harvested. Cretan food is seasoned with the herbs and plants of the mountains of the island. The food is nearly always accompanied by wine from the local vineyards and outstandingly tasty bread, which traditionally is made with yeast.
The most important element however is the olive oil, which for the Cretans and for all the peoples of the Mediterranean, constitutes the basic source of fat in the diet.
